Clare Anvar

MSc, BSc (Hons)

Clinical Therapy & Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Specialist

Clinical Interests:

I have been a clinical massage & Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) therapist since 2004, specialising in all types of post-surgical recovery and disorders of the lymphatic system. Because the lymphatic system has so many roles in the body, lymphatic disorders range from primary or secondary lymphoedema and lipoedema to autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, coeliac & inflammatory bowel diseases, lupus, multiple sclerosis and psoriasis. They also include chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, post-viral syndromes and other acquired infections like Lyme disease or HIV.

Professional Profile:

I am highly skilled, empathic and committed to delivering exemplary care for my patients. They remain my inspiration, tutors and guides. I work closely with consultants and surgeons to speed recovery or to stabilise and maintain chronic conditions. I have extensive experience with complex cases and from many types of short & long-term surgical recovery; oncology, orthopaedics, reconstructive and cosmetic. I am recognised by all UK insurance companies.

Alongside my private practice, I have always studied and worked within different clinical environments. From 2004-2008, I delivered therapies for an HIV charity, where I became a trustee to formulate and deliver HIV awareness training while studying for a foundation degree in Complementary Approaches to health at Thames Valley Uni. I also worked for a local cancer charity providing manual lymphatic drainage and complementary therapies. From 2008-2011, I became a complementary therapist in Cancer Services at University College London hospital (UCLH), while studying for a BSc (Hons) in Health Sciences; remedial massage & neuromuscular therapy at Westminster Uni. I then studied an MSc in Complementary Medicine at Westminster, which was completed in 2015, while working as a clinical massage therapist for Horder Healthcare, who specialise in Orthopaedic surgeries.

I was invited to present a poster of my dissertation on lymphoedema management at the British Lymphology Society (BLS) conference in 2015. This narrowed my focus and I began to specialise more closely on lymphoedema and lipoedema, as they often co-exist. I continued to train in advanced lymphoedema management and three types of MLD. In the last few years, I have developed and teach a method of kinesiology taping to speed post-surgical recovery. I work part-time from the clinic of a reconstructive and plastic surgeon, looking after post-surgical patients. I also now write academic articles and present at international conferences about my work. More recently, in January 2023, I became the Clinical Therapy Advisor to Lipoedema UK and undertook the first specialist training for Advanced Lipoedema Management, with Jane Wigg.
